Egg plant or Brinjal is called katarika in tamil. So katarika sadam is literally eggplant rice in tamil. It is a flavorful rice dish and if spicy is your taste then this one is definitely for you!

Serves: 4-5 persons
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups basmati rice
- 3 cups water
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 medium green chillies
- 2 red chillies
- 4-5 curry leaves
- 1tablespoon sesame seeds
- 1 teaspoon black pepper corns
- 1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger
- 2 tablespoon fried peanuts
- 1 big eggplant or 3-4 small
- a pinch asafetida
- salt
- sugar
- lime juice
Procedure:
Dry roast the sesame seeds and red chillies. Add the black pepper corns and grind then coarsely. Keep this powder aside.
Heat oil in a saucepan and add the cumin seeds. Then add the green chillies, curry leaves, asafetida and grated ginger.
Add the egg plants and saute till they become semi translucent.
Add the rice and mix well.
Add water, salt, sugar and lime juice and cook on medium heat till the rice is done.
Add the spice powder, peanuts and fold well.
