Dal Khichdi

Dal khichdi is one of the quickest dishes that you can think of making. If you want to prepare something tasty and filling and real fast..then dal khichdi is the option. It goes well with pickles and papad or plain simple yoghurt! 

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1 cup toor dal (split yellow pigeon peas)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 5-6 curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 2 red chillies
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1 teaspoon crushed garlic
  • a pinch of asafetida
  • 1 -1/2 teaspoon oil
  • ghee (clarified butter)
  • salt

Procedure:
Cook the rice and dal together. It should have a pasty and almost thick souplike consistency.
Heat oil and wok/ kadai and add the mustard and cumin seeds.
When the seeds start spluttering add asafetida, curry leaves, green and red chillies, crushed garlic and turmeric powder.
Add the rice and dal mixture, salt and cumin powder and stir well adding more water if required.
Switch off the gas and top it with some ghee.
This dish is best served hot, immediately after cooking.
